Celebrate 250 Years of the Marine Corps at MCRD San Diego’s Boot Camp Challenge
For most people, Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego and its iconic yellow buildings are just a glimpse seen from the I-5 freeway or a plane landing at the nearby airport. This historic landmark on the San Diego bayfront is more than four times the size of Disneyland Park and closed to the public. Inside, 17,000 recruits face one question annually: Do you have what it takes to be a United States Marine?

On Saturday, October 18, 2025, the gates of MCRD San Diego will open to the community to test themselves at the Boot Camp Challenge. The main event of the Boot Camp Challenge is a 3-mile race where participants face the same obstacles used in recruit training. You will take on over 10 obstacles while being motivated by 60 real Marine Corps Drill Instructors. Those who decide not to take on the race will experience an exciting schedule of events, including military equipment and vehicle displays, K-9 demonstrations, live music, and more, all celebrating Marine Corps history.
This year’s Boot Camp Challenge is especially significant as 2025 marks the 250th Anniversary of the Marine Corps. You will be running on the same historic grounds that more than 1.5 million young men and women have trained since the Depot’s commissioning in 1921. As one of only two recruit training depots in the country, MCRD San Diego has prepared Marines for every major conflict from World War II onward. The base continues to make history, graduating its first co-ed company in 2021.

Now in its 23rd year, Boot Camp Challenge attracts thousands and continues to stay true to its community roots by inviting spectators to join for free. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to honor those who serve or reconnect with where it all began. All of the proceeds from race registrations help fund quality of life programs and services for Marines and their families through Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS).
Be part of history. Celebrate 250 years of the Marine Corps.
