MCCS, MCICOM Deliver Free High-Speed Wi-Fi to Marines in Barracks Worldwide
HQMC (MR) QUANTICO, VA – Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS), in partnership with Marine Corps Installations Command (MCICOM), today announced the launch of the Barracks Broadband Service Program, a major quality of life enhancement that will provide free high-speed broadband internet access to Marines residing in barracks around the world.
Beginning October 1, junior enlisted Marines living in eligible permanent party, Unit Deployment Program (UDP), and training barracks will receive no-cost, filtered Wi-Fi service delivering download speeds of up to 100 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 20 Mbps. Marines may opt to pay for unfiltered access at varying speeds.
The initiative makes the Marine Corps the first military service to provide high-speed, no-cost Wi-Fi to junior enlisted servicemembers in every eligible barracks across the globe, representing a significant investment in the well-being, connectivity, and quality of life of Marines.
“Reliable, high-speed connectivity is no longer simply a convenience, it is an essential part of modern life, enabling Marines to stay connected with family and friends, access educational and professional resources, manage personal affairs, and enjoy digital services and entertainment,” said Ed Cutshall, CEO and Director of MCCS Business and Support Division (MR). “Most importantly, Marines will have access to a hundredfold increase in internet speed at no cost to them. This initiative is another tangible example of our commitment to investing in Marines and delivering the quality of life improvements they expect and deserve.”
The program is expected to benefit up to 80,000 active-duty Marines residing in eligible barracks across installations in the continental United States and Japan where operational Wi-Fi infrastructure is already in place.
For many Marines, reliable internet service has become a foundational part of daily life. Whether pursuing off-duty education, connecting with loved ones, accessing financial and healthcare services, or streaming entertainment during personal time, dependable broadband access helps reduce barriers and improve the overall barracks living experience.
The initiative is enabled through authorities provided by Section 651 of the FY25 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which authorized military departments to provide broadband internet access at no cost to servicemembers living in unaccompanied housing. Subsequent legislative updates expanded that authority to include overseas locations, ensuring Marines stationed abroad can receive the same benefit.
MCICOM serves as the program's resource sponsor, while MCCS MR manages program execution and oversight. Boingo Wireless will provide a secure, reliable Wi-Fi service, including network operations, user onboarding, customer support, and performance reporting.
