Marine Corps Community Services Announces New Divisional Merchandise Manager for Hardlines and Commercial Military Clothing
HQMC (MR) QUANTICO, VA – Marine Corps Community Services’ Business and Support Services Division (MR) is proud to announce the promotion of Peter J. Leon as the new Divisional Merchandise Manager for Hardlines and Commercial Military Clothing. Leon brings more than two decades of retail merchandising and leadership experience, including nearly 11 years dedicated to serving the Marine Corps community. His career has been defined by strategic growth, data‑driven decision‑making, and a deep commitment to supporting Marines, Sailors, and their families around the world.
“It has been a tremendous privilege to support Marines, Sailors, and their families throughout my career, and I am honored and excited for the opportunity to expand that impact as Divisional Merchandise Manager,” said Leon. “In this role, I will focus on strategic growth and process innovation across Hardlines and Commercial Military Clothing, identifying creative ways to deliver greater value and savings to our patrons while preserving and strengthening the giveback that supports critical community services.”
He added, “I am equally committed to ensuring Marines and Sailors have the products they need, when and where they need them, through strong collaboration with vendor partners, command leadership, and the continued expansion of our Buying Alliance initiatives.”
Leon’s retail journey began shortly after graduating from Penn State University with a degree in Marketing, launching into buying and merchandise planning roles at Boscov’s, Macy’s/Federated Department Stores, and Value City Department Stores. Those early years shaped a merchant who balances the art and science of retail, combining customer insight, financial discipline, and strong vendor partnerships. When he joined MCCS in 2015, he found a deeper sense of purpose in his work. Since then, he has held leadership roles across both Hardlines and Commercial Military Clothing, managing businesses ranging from Toys and Seasonal to complex military uniform assortments supporting recruit training, Officer Candidate School, graduations, ceremonial events, and operational readiness programs.
“Peter’s promotion is exceptionally well‑deserved. Over the past decade, he has demonstrated strong leadership, strategic vision, and unwavering dedication to the Marine Corps community. His work has consistently delivered growth, strengthened vendor partnerships, and elevated the customer experience,” said Sarah Dilday, Chief Merchant. “Peter is a builder of people and programs; his commitment to excellence and his ability to develop future leaders make him an invaluable asset to our merchandising organization. We are thrilled to welcome him into this expanded leadership role.”
Throughout his tenure, Leon has delivered exceptional results across multiple categories. He managed a $50M+ Commercial Military Clothing business, grew gross margin dollars by $1.5M, and was the sole buyer to exceed eight of nine planned KPI goals between 2017 and 2019. In his most recent role overseeing Toys, Outdoor, Gifts, Home Décor, Seasonal, and Furniture, he drove 96% gross margin dollar growth in Toys, increased sales by 20% over two years, and generated more than $500K in incremental revenue through new vendor partnerships. His leadership also produced a 65% increase in LEGO and Mattel sales and a seasonal department transformation praised by store teams across the enterprise. Beyond financial performance, Leon is known for his mentorship and team development, having coached and promoted multiple junior team members.
“Peter exemplifies the best of MCCS: mission‑focused, collaborative, and relentlessly committed to serving Marines and their families. His track record of innovation, financial performance, and team development speaks for itself, but it is his character and leadership style that truly set him apart,” said Jen Wible, Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer. “Peter brings an impressive resume of experience from outside the gate coupled with a thoughtful, analytical approach to merchandising and a genuine passion for supporting those who serve. We are proud to welcome him into this critical role and look forward to the impact he will continue to make across the enterprise.”
Leon’s professional development includes completion of the UNC Strategic Business Leadership Program and the UNC Manager’s Essentials Program, both shaped and approved by MCCS leadership, as well as the Lejeune Leadership Institute’s Civilian Leadership Development program. His career reflects not only technical expertise in merchandising, analytics, and financial planning, but also a deep commitment to collaboration, service, and the mission of supporting Marines and their families.
