HQMC (MR), QUANTICO, VA -- The Legends Golf Course at Parris Island, Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island, South Carolina has been recognized by the South Carolina Golf Association’s 2022 Club of the Year Award. (Palmetto Golfer) This makes The Legends the first military course, and first publicly accessible course, to win the distinguished Club of the Year award.

The Parris Island Golf Course is no stranger to firsts. The course sits on the same land as the earliest successful European settlement in what is now the United States. It is the oldest golf course in Beaufort County, South Carolina, opening years before other courses opened in the area. And the 13th hole at The Legends is named after the Marine Corps’ first woman Brigadier General, Gail M. Reals, who herself earned the title U.S. Marine, as a recruit at MCRD Parris Island.

“Most communities with golf courses are driven by golf… Not at Parris Island. We make Marines” said Andy Hinson, Director of Golf at The Legends. “The military in general has a lot in common with golf. They’re both strategic and highly competitive.” This is evident throughout the course, from famous Marine photographs and biographies on the clubhouse walls to the possibility of seeing recruits earning the title, U.S. Marine.

The Legends Golf Course of Parris Island is available to the Department of Defense and civilians who obtain a visitors pass. The 18-hole course offers daily play, golf leagues, tournaments, outings, instructional programs, exhibitions, events, and summer youth activities.
